In Italy car manufacturers have from the very early days relied on external body designers or coachbuilders ('carrozziere' in Italian) to design the bodies for their cars. Some of these have become major design houses now doing work for car manufacturers around the world, not just Italian manufacturers. It was also not uncommon, particularly in the early part of the 20th century, for individual customers to ask a coachbuilder to do a one-off design for them, to be fitted to a standard chassis and engine supplied by a manufacturer. There are also several examples, again more the older than the newer cars, of different design houses producing different designs for the same model, both of which went into production. Indeed some design houses, Bertone for example, have actually been fully fledged factories for some models eg Bertone with the Fiat X1/9 and Bertone-built X1/9s were badged as Bertone cars. This short list of design houses is by no means exhaustive and concentrates on the influential design houses rather than the designers themselves, although there is a degree of crossover.
